Weaver and Brownell Target Third Consecutive National Title at Specter Center

(L-R): Amanda Sobhy, Olivia Weaver, Timmy Brownell, Shahjahan Khan

The nation’s top professionals return to the Arlen Specter 黑料不打烊 Center to compete in the Desai Family U.S. Women’s and S.L. Green U.S. Men’s Squash Championships as world No. 4 Olivia Weaver and world No. 30 Timmy Brownell prepare to defend their national titles, April 29-May 2, in Philadelphia.

Thirty-two men and sixteen women represent the depth of American squash with top professional, college and junior talent on display and the title of U.S. Champion on the line. All matches are free admission and will stream live on ussquash.org/us-championships. The semifinals and finals will feature a special broadcast with commentary, May 1-2.

The Desai Family U.S. Women’s Championship draw will take on a new shape due to the unfortunate achilles rupture to 2014 champion and world No. 18 Sabrina Sobhy last weekend. Weaver leads the draw as the top seed in search of what could be a third consecutive national title, and will hope to have recovered from a recent hamstring injury that forced her to withdraw from the El Gouna semifinals earlier this month. Weaver is seeded to face world No. 84 Laila Sedky in the semifinals, as the Seattle native slots into the four seed in place of the injured Sobhy.

World No. 12 Amanda Sobhy opposes Weaver in the draw as the two seed as she targets matching Latasha Khan’s national title record with her seventh. Sobhy is seeded for a semifinal rematch against world No. 16 and three seed Marina Stefanoni, who enters the U.S. Championships as a top twenty player for the first time.

In the men’s draw, Brownell joins Weaver with ambitions of a third consecutive national title. Brownell leads the draw as the top seed and is seeded to face world No. 108 Salim Khan in the semifinals. Two seed and world No. 66 Shahjahan Khan will aim to capture his first national title but will be challenged in the bottom half of the draw by 2025 finalist and three seed Nick Spizzirri. Spizzirri will have his sights set on a maiden national title having defeated both Brownell and Shahjahan Khan on the PSA tour in recent weeks.

Former U.S. champions Chris Gordon and Olivia Blatchford Clyne enter the tournament with hopes of causing a stir. Both draws display the depth of American talent with top-ranked college and junior players set to challenge Team USA’s top professionals.
