Ann Wetzel

(1931- 2024)

A product of Norm Bramall鈥檚 legendary women鈥檚 program at the Cynwyd Club, Ann Wetzel had a profound effect on women鈥檚 squash. A consistent shotmaker with well-honed strokes, she lost in the finals of the nationals six times before winning her sole title. She won four Pennsylvania state titles, eight Philadelphia & Districts and one Connecticut states title. Her most memorable win might have been when she broke Betty Howe Constable鈥檚 six year unbeaten streak with a crushing victory in the 1959 Pennsylvania states. A vibrant left-waller in doubles, she won national titles with Anne Mattson, Barbara Clement, Sylvia Simonin and Jane Austin Stauffer. Wetzel鈥檚 legacy off the court was most felt at Penn, where she started the women鈥檚 squash team in 1968 and coached until 1994. In 1973 Wetzel was one of the women who founded the women鈥檚 intercollegiate association.
